Onedrive is the Microsoft way of backup files. Well Onedrive is not a backup tool it is a synchronization tool.
If you use onedrive to backup files do not store your original files in Onedrive!!!
If you do and someone like yourself deletes files from the OneDrive Website... Onedrive will delete your Documents....
When Onedrive fails... you have to reinstall it, OneDrive makes the wrong assumption that the file situation in OneDrive Cloud is the right situation. All new files you created and were not synced into OneDrive will get lost or renamed with the name of your Computer in the Filename.....
You have to select a different base folder for OneDrive than the previous Onedrive installation...... ending up with a full duplication of all your files.... OneDrive is not very clever and downloads ALL your files again while they are already on your PC.....
YOU have to figure out with tools like Duplicate cleaner if the latest files you have created or updated are already on OneDrive..... when did OneDrivefail? who knows?
Copy all your old Documents to the new OneDrive location skipping all duplicates? No only the same ones... well good luck
I took a different approach and kept my Documents and Pictures in my profile folder.
I use Syncbackfree to do the backup. Syncback free has a backup mode which never "Synchronizes"files from OneDrive to My Documents.
It also has a feature to remove files from OneDriveafter a number of days (say 90). In case I delete a file or save a wrong file and loose my data, it is not immediately synchronized to OneDrive but only when the Sync-back Free backup starts and deleted files are kept for 90 days.... just in case you need it restored.
If you want on the fly protection I recommend Yadis, Yadis is a nice tool which monitors file changes on your documents and pictures and copies them when they are changed
Yadis can do versioning of your documents e.g. keep 10 versions Adding a time stamp to the old versions file name.
Yadis has one problem it only detects on the fly changes, it is does not run for a little while no versions are made and no backups will be made as well. Therefore SynBack Free is used to make sure all new and updated files will be Backup to OneDrive
Sync-back free compares both source and destination and copies only the newer files to the destination. For versioning in SyncBack Free you need to buy the pro version.
So we use Yadis for on the fly versioning and Sync-back for being sure we have a full backup of my documents.
In SyncBack free I use 90 days to delete files in the destination not being in the source, this means after 90 days deleted files are removed and my versions of files created by Yadis are being removed. My experience with Yadis deleting older versions is not good, I use 5 versions of each file and some of the files had 90 versions... with syncback free I know all versions older than 90 days will be removed automatically.
With Yadis running I know I will keep my original files even if I mess them up.
With SynBack Free running I know I have a full copy of my Files copied from My Documents to OneDrive,
If OneDrive does not run, mess up its OneDrive Folder etc. I only have to make sure it is working again and all the mess created by OneDrive will be fixed by SyncBack Free.
If OneDrive messes up my OneDrive folder on my PC I reinstall OneDrive and SyncBack back free will make sure OneDrive is in Sync with My Documents and not the other way around.
For versioning I use Yadis http://www.codessentials.com/
For Real backup I use SyncBackFree http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html
Syncback free can Backup from One folder to Another, I Backup "Documents"to " OneDrive\Documents" or "<Company> - OneDrive"
Pictures to OneDrive\Pictures
Downloads to OneDrive\Downloads
Favorites to OneDrive\Favorites
Appdata to OneDrive\AppData (Yes it can, SyncBack Free skips certain folders like temporary internet files and you can add or remove additional folders or files
Let OneDrive Backup to the cloud just in case you need it
Restore Syncbackfree and start the restore feature of Syncback free to do the restore and view the log file if everything went as expected...
OneDrive does not have a log file,
Syncback free can backup all files to one zip file. I use this to get round the filename restrictions of OneDrive...
